World Food Safety Day 2020

The World Health Organisation has announced that Sunday June 7th is World Food Safety Day, the same organization that has been giving us guidance around the pandemic that has ravaged the world since late 2019.

Though our focus has been on staying healthy by carrying out good hygiene, social distancing, cough etiquette, staying at home and the wearing of masks when outside we must not forget the importance of food safety.

Food Business Operators have switched from the traditional model of food service to Take Away, Home Deliveries and Click & Go, just to make ends meet and keep key staff on board. Many customers enjoy the new and varied experience but is it always safe?

Times have been difficult for all and we must be able to adapt to a changing landscape, but it must be done carefully and safely. If you do switch your catering model that you must consider all hazards associated with the new venture and implement appropriate controls. Make sure food is labelled correctly if it is intended to be reheated and allergens are declared. It is vital temperature control is maintained; be it hot or cold, and raw and cooked ingredients and garnishes are segregated. Inform the local Health Officer of your plans, update your food safety management/HACCP system and train your staff accordingly. Your Customer deserves it!

In three weeks’ time, we will return to normal with all the necessary COVID-19 controls in place. Staff training has never been more necessary. Social distancing must be practiced, and establishments will be inspected regularly. We have time now and great resources available from the Government to review the business and to implement the required controls.

All members of The Food Safety Professionals Association have the expertise to advise you and train your team.
